Located in a scenic position at the centre of the Gulf of the Angels, the city of Cagliari, both ancient and modern, lies between hills, small lakes and the sea. A crystal-clear sea and 12 kilometres of fine white-sand beaches make Cagliari a truly special city. The first stop is at Monte Urpinu hill, overlooking the entire city. From its panoramic position we can see, on one side, the port of Cagliari and the Capoterra hills in the background, and on the other, the long "Poetto" city beach, whose coastal pools and ponds offer safe haven to the thousands of pink flamingoes that have chosen Molentargius Pond as their nesting area.
After a short visit to the Basilica of Bonaria (an important religious site in Cagliari built in 1325 by order of Infante Don Alfonso d'Aragona), we reach the old quarter of Cagliari, “Castello”. A glance at the Roman amphitheatre, and then we proceed through the fortified citadel between the city walls and the Pisan towers, dating back to 1200. A visit to the National Archaeological Museum with important finds ranging from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on the Nuragic period.
Time for shopping and to visit artisans’ workshops in the old town. It is possible to visit the National Art Gallery, with works by Catalan and Sardinian artists from the XV to XVI centuries. A visit to the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria di Castello, flanked by the Archbishop's See and the Prefecture Building, formerly Viceroy Carlo Alberto's residence. After an aperitif in the oldest café in the city, return to the hotel.
